Changing your vehicle's motor oil is one of the most important regular maintenance tasks to keep your car running smoothly. Luckily, changing your oil is a straightforward process you can do yourself with the right tools and a bit of know-how.
The Steps
- Run the engine for a few minutes to warm up the oil, then turn it off.
- Position the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug and carefully remove the plug using the socket wrench. Let the oil drain fully.
- Locate the oil filter and use the filter wrench to unscrew and remove it. Let any residual oil drain out.
- Screw on the new filter and hand-tighten.
- Replace the drain plug and tighten securely with the socket wrench.
- Using the funnel, slowly pour in the new oil.
- Start the engine and let it run for a minute, then re-check for any leaks around the drain plug or filter. Shut off the engine and re-check the oil level, topping off if needed.
