Changing your vehicle's motor oil is one of the most important regular maintenance tasks to keep your car running smoothly. Luckily, changing your oil is a straightforward process you can do yourself with the right tools and a bit of know-how.

The Steps

  1. Run the engine for a few minutes to warm up the oil, then turn it off.
  2. Position the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug and carefully remove the plug using the socket wrench. Let the oil drain fully.
  3. Locate the oil filter and use the filter wrench to unscrew and remove it. Let any residual oil drain out.
  4. Screw on the new filter and hand-tighten.
  5. Replace the drain plug and tighten securely with the socket wrench.
  6. Using the funnel, slowly pour in the new oil.
  7. Start the engine and let it run for a minute, then re-check for any leaks around the drain plug or filter. Shut off the engine and re-check the oil level, topping off if needed.
