What to Do After a Car Accident

Follow these key steps to stay safe, protect yourself legally, and start the repair process smoothly.

  1 CONTACT AUTHORITIES

Call 911 if anyone is hurt. If you're driving a company vehicle, notify your supervisor immediately.

  2 STAY SAFE

Stay calm and move to a safe location if possible. Turn on your hazard lights and be aware of traffic.

  3 DON'T APOLOGIZE

An apology can be interpreted as admitting fault. Ask if the other driver is okay, but avoid admitting responsibility.

  4 GET WITNESSES

If anyone saw the accident, ask for their name and contact info. Witnesses can help clarify what happened.

  5 EXCHANGE INFORMATION

Swap names, phone numbers, driver's license numbers, insurance details, and vehicle plate numbers with all involved drivers.

6 TAKE PHOTOS & RECORD DETAILS

Photograph damage, surroundings, and road conditions. Write down weather, police report number, and officer info if applicable.

  7 CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE

Report the accident and provide your documentation. Your insurer will guide you on next steps, including collision repairs.
