With a traditional rearview mirror, bright lights can reflect back into your eyes, making it more difficult to see. An auto-dimming mirror will dim whenever it detects bright lights, and it does a great job thanks to its sensors and electrochromic gel.
When the sensors embedded in the mirror detect light, they send out an electric charge. The electrochromic gel responds to that charge by changing its color. It goes from being transparent to slightly dark. In doing so, it can block some of the light from reflecting into your eyes. These mirrors have been designed so that they can dim just enough to be helpful while allowing you to see what's behind you.
