Brakes are one of the most important safety and control features on any vehicle, so it is important to understand how they work. The brake system is controlled with the brake pedal inside the vehicle, next to the gas pedal. Pressing down on the brake pedal will mechanically activate the brake pads. These are a set of four pads located next to each wheel. Pressing the pedal moves the brake pads into contact with the wheels. The friction causes the wheels to rapidly slow their rotations, decreasing the speed of the vehicle. The harder you press the pedal, the harder the pads press against the wheels, slowing them down more quickly. Brake pads are durable, but over years of use, they will wear down and need to be replaced so they can keep functioning well.
