A transfer case is a gear box that is connected to both the transmission and the front and rear driveshafts. It allows you to switch between two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive high, four-wheel drive low, and neutral. It is an important component for the off-road vehicles that come with both drive active drivetrains.

The transfer case transfers engine power to the axles while allowing you to select different modes of operation. You can use it to increase traction on slippery surfaces when you're off-roading, or you can use it to increase fuel economy by keeping your engine running at lower speeds.

Transfer cases contain a fluid coupling that allows them to shift power between front and rear axles without locking up. They also contain a neutral position that allows you to disconnect both front and rear driveshafts from the engine so that they don't turn while you're driving down a hill or through mud.
