One of the types of crashes that people undergo is the roll-over crash. This is one of the most dangerous types of crashes because more of the vehicle is damaged including the roof. People are very likely to die in rollover crashes. This is why the roof test is conducted for vehicles.

During a rollover, there are certain vehicles that have side curtain airbags that deploy so that the occupants can have reduced chances of major injuries. However, the roof of the vehicle has to be strong enough to leave enough space for the occupant to survive when it hits the ground.

One of the factors the test looks at is the likelihood of the occupant to be ejected from the vehicle. A strong roof is likely to keep the occupant from falling out of the vehicle during a rollover accident even if they are not wearing a seat belt.
